Thompson and Mera win the 9th Caribbean Laser Midwinter Regatta. January 14th-16th, 2011.
Sunny blue skies, 14 to 16 knots, and the famous Cabarete surfing down wind.
The short reach legs, and the long reach back in to the beach, will stay on sailors mind for a long time.
For sailors who are looking to practice on this side of the world for the Senior Worlds in Australia, Cabarete proved to be the perfect training ground.
Last man standing. Nick Thompson who won the event with one race to spare, left the final heat for Raul Aguayo DOM, and Charlie Buckingham USA to sort out between them the second place position. Charlie who finished 5th the race before the last had to finish 1st to secure his second place. He started well, and kept the lead for the entire course not allowing anyone to come even close.
Former Sunfish world champion Sebastian Mera DOM, won the Radial class with a race to spare, followed by Philipine Van Aanholt AHO in second, and Laser class legend 72 year old Peter Seidenberg USA in third place.
